Customize Your DIY Beauty Routine with Essential Oils

Alright, folks! I heard you. DIY Beauty is a major goal and I looooove it.

I cannot even begin to tell you the difference DIY beauty has made for my skin. Before I found DIY, hundreds of dollars were flowing out of my bank account for rosacea creams, moisturizers for sensitive skin, pimple blasters, laser treatments, and don't even get me started on the mass of makeup that I used to cover my uneven skin tone.

No one taught me that my skin was revolting from all the chemicals that I was putting on it. Every time a problem popped up, I put more chemicals on it trying to control it, but it never fully submitted. When I switched to DIY and began listening to my skin and allowing it to function as it was intended-- that's when the magic happened!

Got a few minutes? I'd love to talk to you a little bit about essential oils and carrier oils that are great for your skin and how to incorporate those into your custom DIYs. Sounds like fun, right?! OMG, I AM SO EXCITED!

We got a lot to cover so let's jump right in!

DIY Beauty consists of essential oils, carrier oils, and magic! POOF! Just kidding. Just essential oils and carrier oils, but I thought that sounded like more fun. Hehehee... Let's start with essential oils since they are my favorites! Just pick 1-2 if your favorites from 1-2 of the categories below. YES, it's that easy!

Essentials Oil For Dry Skin

  • Lavender
  • Geranium
  • Rose
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Sandalwood
  • Palmarosa

Essentials Oil For Oily Skin

  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary
  • Cedarwood
  • Neroli
  • Patchouli

Essential Oils For Normal Skin

  • Frankincense
  • Lavender
  • Rose
  • Geranium

Essential Oils For Hormonal or Teenage Skin

  • Clary Sage
  • Tea Tree
  • Thieves
  • Purification
  • Juniper

Essential Oils For Youthful Skin

  • Frankincense
  • Myrrh
  • Helichrysum
  • Rose
  • Carrot Seed

What I like to do is to pick TWO beauty categories like Dry and Youthful or Oily and Hormonal/Teenage and then pick 2-3 essential oil total from the categories. My favorites are Lavender, Frankincense, and Helichrysum! What are yours?

Carrier Oils
Next, we have to get a carrier oil for your skin type. A carrier oil is different than an essential oil because it is used to dilute the essential oil and help it cover more surface area, plus work as a time-release so you get all the great benefits for longer.

Carrier oils range from olive oil to coconut oil to argan oil to jojoba oil. There are so many options! But not all are created equal for YOUR SKIN. For instance, avocado oil is amazing for super dry skin, but most people will break out because they don't need that much moisture. In fact, just a little bit of avocado oil can go a long way for dry skin.

Check out the list in the graphic and pick out 2-3 carrier oils that fix your skin type. ALWAYS mix 2-3 carrier oils together when making beauty DIYs because it will reduce the chance of your skin breaking out. More than 3 is pretty much overkill. Wanna read more about Carrier Oils? Custom DIYs
You can easily alter any DIY recipe that you see on Facebook, Pinterest, or from any blog. It's super easy once you know what works for your skin. For instance, let's look at my DIY Wrinkle Blasting Serum

  • 5 drops Lavender Essential Oil  (Dry Skin)
  • 5 drops of Frankincense Essential Oil (Youthful Skin)
  • 2 TBSP Rose Hips Oil (Youthful Skin)
  • 2 TBSP Jojoba Oil  (Sensitive Skin)
But let's say you have hormonal skin that's oily. You could change the recipe like this...
  • 5 drops Clary Sage Essential Oil  (Hormonal Skin)
  • 5 drops of Frankincense Essential Oil (Youthful Skin)
  • 2 TBSP Grapeseed Oil (Oily Skin)
  • 2 TBSP Jojoba Oil  (Sensitive Skin)
It's just a simple swap! There are some "rules" though...

RULE #1: You can't swap out a liquid carrier oil for a solid one (like coconut oil or shea butter).

RULE #2: You can't substitute drop for drop when it comes to Rose Essential Oil because it's so darn concentrated. You just need 1 drop per 5 ml bottle of carrier oil of REAL Rose Essential Oil. Not the $10 kind you find at the store. That's just basically glorified synthetic perfume.

RULE #3: The same goes for really strong oils like Peppermint or Thieves. Those may need to be decreased due to their "hot" nature. Be sure to do a skin test before using.

SQUIRREL BRAIN WARNING!
Wanna know how to tell if your rose is real? If your Rose Essential Oil costs $10-- that's not real. At all. I mean, you can't buy a dozen roses for $10 so how can you buy a 5 ml bottle that has thousands of roses in it for $10? Makes no sense. You will spend over $100 for a bottle of real Rose Essential Oil. And, yes, it's worth it.

Word of Caution
Remember that not all essential oils are created equal for skin care. Some essential oils have caused skin burns, discoloration and other irritations so you don't want to use them on your beautiful face! Make sure you are using good quality essential oils.
