5 DIYs for Back To School

Okay, okay... I know it's July and you're probably thinking "Sherri, why are you talking about back to school in the middle of summer. This is so lame!" Um, yes, it's kinda lame, but I am channeling my inner diva which told me that I should do what I want. {sassy head bob/hand wave}

Seriously, I have been thinking about about this because I'm TRYING to get my degree in aromatherapy, but life is busy! Between works, school, family and responsibilities-- where does the time go!? POOF!!

The theme is back to school, but this blog post is really for everyone because we are all students of life, right? {smirks} Okay! That was kind of lame, but you know what I mean!

5 DIYs for Back To School (or for work-- whatever)
We are going to touch on what I think are the most important aspects of being productive:  attention, focus, courage, immune system support and a restful night's sleep. When we have all of these things lined up, we are totally unstoppable. Seriously, just try! I dare you!

This blog is mainly for school age kids or adult, but remember that simple DIYs can be great for younger children too! Use essential oils like cedarwood, vetiver, lavender, valor or peace and calming to keep kids calm and to help them focus. They are great to rub on the little one's feet to keep their minds in the right place!

1. Daydreamer? Pay Attention!
When you are trying to remember lots of information for a presentation or a test, did you know that scent can help you improve your recall? The trick is that scent is linked to memories. For instance, remember how your grandmother made THE BEST cookies? Now every time you smell those cookies in your oven, you think about your grandmother and how awesome those times were? That's the basic idea here too!

A specific scent will trigger specific memories. Cool right? For example, if you always diffuse peppermint when you are studying history or working on your project, then you will have more powerful memories of that subject when you smell peppermint during the test or when you are giving your presentation.

Okay... I know you have a question. How are you going to smell Peppermint in the middle of your presentation without looking like a giant idiot who may be possibly sniffing the newest fad in drugs in front of your boss/teacher/peers? Simple answer. A diffuse necklace or make a roll-on and apply it right before you need to recall the info! Feel free to use one essential oil or mix and match for endless combinations!

Attention Roll-on
  • 20 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
  • 20 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil
  • 10 drops of Vetiver Essential Oil
  • Fill the rest of a 5 ml roll on bottle with a liquid carrier oil such as almond oil.
Wanna try different combinations? Then here are some other essential oils that you can mix and match to create a custom blend to help support memory and attention.
  • Peppermint
  • Motivation
  • Clarity
  • Citrus Fresh
  • Orange
  • Rosemary
  • Brain Power
  • Frankincense
  • Palo Santo
  • Thieves
  • Purification
  • And a lot more

2. Focus Blend
When I am looking to focus, I will reach for my diffuser. Every. Single. Time. Why? Because scent is super powerful and it really can increase productivity regardless of it's staying focused on a physical task, building a presentation, or making a super boring spreadsheet. You can read more about Why You Should Diffuse Essential Oils if you're interested.

Focus Diffuser Blend
  • 3 drops of Lemon or Orange Essential Oil
  • 3 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 1 drop of Spearmint or Peppermint Essential Oil
Pop that bad boy in your diffuser and make every second matter! And don't worry if you're on the go-- diffusers can travel! Have you heard of the USB, Orb or Travel Fan diffusers? They are amazing, small and extremely portable which means you can diffuse anywhere and anytime as long as you have a power outlet!

3. Presentation? No Problem!
There are some people in the world who LOVE to talk in front of groups of people. I am not one of them. Don't get me wrong-- I love to talk, but lots of eyeballs looking at me freaks me out. Once I get freaked out, then weird things start coming out of my mouth and I babble about how much I like "Chixie Dicks" and "Heffer Jones" (seriously-- this has actually happened).

To help prevent "Word Vomit", I recommend using Valor or Valor II before any public speaking event. I know a lot of performers who also use this before getting on stage as well. It really helps to calm your nerves, but keep your mind sharp!

Courage Roll-On
  • 30 drops of Valor or Valor II
  • 15 drops of Orange
  • Liquid carrier oil (such as almond, jojoba, olive oil)
  • 5 drops of Vetiver
  • 5 ml bottle with a Roller Fitment
Fill the 5 ml roll-on with about 40 drops of liquid carrier oil or until the 5 ml bottle is mostly full. Apply to the back of the neck or behind the ears for courage! If you don't want to make a roll-on you can just put 1 drop of valor and 1 drop of orange in your diffuser necklace for a boost!

4. Immune System Support

I believe that a healthy immune system is the best kind of immune system. When I worked as a nurse, my #1 goal was to stay healthy so that my body could be better equipped to deal with anything that it happened to encounter. My motto has always been to worry about keeping things running well instead of waiting for them to break down. Pretty smart, huh?

5. Sleepy Time Solutions
One of the best ways to keep our mind and body functioning optimally is to get a good night's sleep. Essential oils can help support a better night's rest by helping you to fall asleep faster, relax after a hard day or even to help you sleep more soundly.

  1. I love this! Never thought of using scent to trigger memory for something like a test, but it seems so obvious. I also give quite a few presentations and haven't tried oils to help with the word vomit-- your "Chixie Dicks" had me laughing :-)
