DIY Foundation Powder

Wanna be a natural beauty? Of course you do! One of the best things in the world is finding a DIY that is gentle on skin and when you wear it consistently-- your skin glows!

This powder is soft and sheer. It truly is a light coverage which is exactly what I wanted. If you're looking for full coverage, you won't find it here! This works well over liquid foundation (there is a recipe at the bottom of this post) or by itself depending on the coverage you want. But the good news is that using this regularly can help improve the appearance of skin naturally. WIN!

DIY Natural Foundation
  • 1/4c Arrowroot Flour
  • 2-4 TBSP Cocoa Powder (use less for light skin and more for darker skin)
  • Optional: Cinnamon, Ginger or Nutmeg as needed for depth of color
  • 1/2 TBSP Redman Bentonite Clay
  • 25 drops of Skin Care Essential Oils (see below)
Simply combine all of the ingredients in a mason jar, shake and you're ready to apply. Test a small amount on your skin and then alter your ratio of cocoa powder to arrowroot as needed to adjust for your skin tone. *I am pretty darn pale so I barely needed 2 TBSP of Cocoa Powder and I used just a pinch of organic Cinnamon.

Apply a light layer on your skin. Make sure you have a good quality makeup brush like a Kabuki Make-Up Brush that will give you better coverage without looking like you face planted into your makeup jar.

Skin Care Essential Oils
When using any essential oils directly on your skin, you want to make sure they are good quality essential oils. Low quality essential oils or perfume oils can cause breakouts, chemical skin burns or a variety of other unwanted effects. I always recommend this brand for DIY beauty.

Use combination such as these...
  • Dry skin: 15 drops of Lavender, 10 drops of Geranium Essential Oils
  • Normal Skin: 15 drops of Lavender, 10 drops Elemi
  • Oily Skin: 10 drops of Cypress, 10 drops of Geranium, 5 drops of Bergamot
  • Aging Skin: 15 drops of Frankincense, 10 drops of Lavender, 5 drops Cypress
  • Teenage Skin: 10 drops Lavender, 10 drops Tea Tree, 5 drops Cedarwood
  • Combination Skin: 15 drops Lavender, 10 drops of Patchouli
  • Sensitive Skin: 10 drops Gentle Baby, 10 drops Lavender, 1 drop Rose
Troubleshooting
If it looks like you’ve fallen head first into your DIY foundation, then let's talk about moderation. Remember a little goes a long way! Try tapping your brush to remove excess before applying

Dry skin? Use a good quality DIY moisturizer and toner before you apply, but remember to let them dry completely before applying your foundation. You can even apply a little DIY Blush afterwards!

If you just aren't getting the results you want then you also may want to consider your makeup brush. Are you using the right one for loose powders? Try a Kabuki Make-Up Brush
which is made specifically for loose powder foundation. It is different from other face brushes because it packs more coverage onto the skin without leaving you all cakey looking.

If you want more coverage, considering using a recipe like this one from CocoWells: DIY Liquid Foundation.

    1. It hasn't been a problem for me. Just shake it up to distribute the oils evenly. If you want, you can add one oil at a time, shake it up and then add the next.

  3. How long DIY foundation last for? I just use the foundation on special occasions. Do know how to make own eyeliners?

    1. 6 months is a safe bet for longevity, but it can last longer than that if stored properly. I have tried to DIY eyeliners and mascara, but they tend to mold and it's so hard to tell when they've gone bad. I use the Savvy Mineral Line for most of my makeup now.
