5 Benefits of Vitamin C Shower Filters

Many of you have messaged me about your desire to use more natural methods for your hair. However, my first question is often unexpected: What kind of water are you using?

This is important because water is a fundamentally part of what is natural, but it's often taken for granted. If we are using water full of chemicals, then how much of an impact will it be to change your shampoo to a more natural variety? And will it even work properly with all the chemical build up?

Always, always fix your water first! So I have to ask-- how safe and effective is your shower water? This is why I recommend getting a Vitamin C Shower Filter, but let me tell you why.

5 benefits of clean, fresh vitamin c water from shower filters for beautiful #skin and #hair without #toxic #chemicals

REDUCING CHEMICALS
There are roughly 2,100 commonly used chemicals in our water supply. One of the most harmful chemicals to hair and skin (and also your airway) is chlorine. According to the Daily Mail, chlorinated water can cause dry skin, dandruff, and frizzy hair. Do you like those? No. Nobody likes any of those things!

Did you know that Vitamin C filters can help reduce chlorine? I am not a chemist, but I do know that Vitamin C reacts with chlorine and even consume it. At least that is what Neal Langerman says, an officer of the American Chemical Society’s Division of Chemical Health and Safety. Vitamin C Shower Filters can help reduce chlorine and chloramines so you have less harm to your beauuuuutiful self.

NOTE: Many cities are switching to chloramine from chlorine. Most chlorine removal filter methods, other than Vitamin C, do not effectively remove or neutralize chloramine, they only work on free chlorine. Leaving you exposed to the harmful effects of chloramine

IMPROVING MOOD
Even the Mayo Clinic says that Vitamin C can help boost your mood. Plus certain chemicals can actually hurt your mood. Did you know that chlorine exposure can cause physical fatigue, mental depression, and a lowered autoimmune function? Boo chlorine!!!

So what better way to start your day than taking a Vitamin C shower?

BEAUTIFYING HAIR AND SKIN
Did you know that your skin and hair actually like things to be a little acidic?  In fact, a weak acid solution is good for the health of your hair and skin! Plus, removing chlorine and chloramine can help reduce dry skin and redness.

In terms of hair-- it can help hair behave better. It keeps moisture locked in so that your hair is softer and less frizzy. Win!!

I have noticed a tremendous difference in my hair and skin after switching from a general shower filter to a Vitamin C shower filter. Even friends and family have asked me what I'm doing differently to my hair.

SANITATION
Do you know what actually comes out of your shower head? Would you be a little disturbed if I told you that millions of microorganisms and bacteria are piled up inside your unfiltered shower head? Uh huh. I thought so.

How would you feel if I told you that research is even showing some of them to be carcinogenic? ECK! Just look up trihalomethanes if you're bored and want to be disturbed.

AIRWAY SUPPORT
When we shower, we breath in all the steam and vapors in the water which may include added chemicals. This can cause our airways to react or our lung to hold onto harmful toxins. Have you heard about The Science News reported that showed that researchers found increases in chloroform in study participants’ lungs of about 2.7ppb after a 10-minute shower? Gross, huh? We know that asthma and allergy sufferers are reported to have fewer attacks when using shower head water filters blocking the irritants.

This isn't new information either! Even back in 1992 the American Journal of Public Health linked a 15% to 35% increase in certain types of cancer to people who consume chlorinated water. Meh.

MY FAVORITE VITAMIN C SHOWER FILTER: So now let's talk about MY FAVORITE THINGS!

Aroma Sense Luxury Shower Head
I have tried several different shower head filters and my absolute favorite is the Large Aroma Sense Handheld Shower Head. It's very much like a rain shower head which means it is so zen. The water feels and sounds very peaceful and relaxing so it has a great spa-like quality to it, but don't worry--- it has great water pressure!

Just know that it does NOT come with a hose if you get the handheld variety, but it fit nicely onto the one I already had. If you do not have a handheld hose and fixture, you may want to get this Shower Head Hose and Bracket or you can buy the fixed wall mounted Vitamin C shower head.

My favorite Vitamin C shower head and filter

AromaSense claims that their "Vitamin C filtration technology can effectively neutralize chlorine to support healthy skin and hair, while its microfiber filtration removes additional contaminants brought through your piping system". And on top of that, it will save water by using 25% less water than a branded shower faucet!

You simply change the filters every 3 months! However, I will caution you to use the UNSCENTED neutral filters because I am unsure of the quality of their scented filters. My shower head came with lemon and I immediately got a headache as soon as I sniffed the package. If you are scent sensitive, then it is very important that you get the unscented version!

If you really want aromatherapy in your shower, try diffusing in your bathroom. I love using the TheraPro diffuser from Young Living or adding essential oils to my bath products such as 10 drops of lavender per oz to my favorite shampoo or making my own body wash.

Or consider making shower bombs using high quality essential oils like these.

Sonaki In-Line Vitamin C Water Filter
If you already have a shower head that you love, then you may want to get the Sonaki Fresh In-line Shower Filter This Vitamin C water filter simply attaches to your pre-existing shower head and it's so easy to use!

In-line vitamin c #shower #filter benefits

I recommend this product over the Sonaki Vitamin C shower heads because the Sonaki shower head we purchased was, um, well... sucky at directing the flow of water. I am not sure if it was mineral/water deposits or a problem with the shower head itself, but half of a dozen of the holes within the shower head would direct water sideways rather than downward which was definitely not relaxing or zen like.

Just like the AromaSense, the filters for any Vitamin-C filter need to be replaced around every 3 months. However, what is nice about this in-line filter is that you can see the level of the Vitamin C so you know when you need to change it.

I hope that these suggestions help you on your quest for optimal health and beauty! And if you are wondering about more DIY hair ideas-- I have some coming your way in 2016!

*Disclaimer: I received the AromaSense Vitamin C filter for free in return for an honest review. And you all know that I'm always honest! I never recommend anything that I don't love and use regularly!

  1. This sounds like something I would definitely like to install in my bathroom. Everyone in my family has very sensitive skin and my daughter and I struggle with eczema. Having something that would help like this would be a great investment. Thanks for the review!
